Week 4: Disscussion Question 3

3). Pick one concept from the assigned reading this week, not already discussed, that you found useful or interesting and discuss it

When reading the in the Epstein book I found many concepts to be useful in everyday life. One of the concepts that I found to be useful for myself was when the author talked about raising objections in chapter 7. I think for most students taking this course this is an important concept to know and something that we as students should be a aware of. One of the suggestions that the author makes was to be aware of not being irrational. It is important to be open to all arguments. One of the other suggestions that the author makes is when making critical decisions, the writer should be able to raise conclusion that might be false. This shows that you are open and able to raise objection to make sure the point being made

  1. Hi Allyson! =) You make a really good point in your blog. People tend to stray away from objections while Chapter 7 teaches us to, "raise objections." It's always good to be open minded and ready for all types of arguments. I like the concept of "raising objections" because it's not a normal thing everyday to go against your friends or parents lol. But, this concept really makes me think of lawyers who has to argue from all angles and how strong their arguments come out to be. I agree with the book, "when making critical decisions, the writer should be able to raise conclusion that might be false." It shows that we're using our minds to argue over any subject matter and that it allows us to be open to all claims.

  2. Hey Allyson, your post is excellent. I like how you mentioned the importance of raising objections. The ability to raise objections and knowing how to is very useful. I agree with you that students should have some knowledge on the subject. I would go beyond students though and say that everyone should know of objections. All the things you discuss in your post certainly can be helpful in life. The part about not being irrational was a great point also. I’ve witnessed many be irrational in arguments and even I have done it myself, which is disappointing. This can be lessened though if everyone learned about irrational thought.
