2). Discuss one concept from the readings: Truth Tables or Aristotelian Logic that you found useful. Please explain the concept and give a personal example or personal story. In other words, please apply the concept to everyday life and everyday argumentation.
When I was reading the Truth Tables, in the Epstein book,” Critical Thinking”. I found a lot of the material to be really useful in everyday life. One of the concepts that stood out to me was the truth-value of a compound claim. In this type of claim they use the words, “or”, “and”, “not” and “if”. The claim is that each person uses these words constantly throughout the day. That is we uses these words together then we can create multiple truth word claims.
I found this to be really interesting because I would of never of thought to put the words together and then that would be able to make the truth claims. That it contains a formula to place the words together. Since A->B but B->A this is something that I knew nothing about.
I think we can use these skills that are taught within this reading to be more aware of what words we chose to use when we either write or speak. I think it is important especially in today’s society to watch what we say since its easy to pick up the “slang type lingo”.
I really believe you did a good job of explaining the subject at hand. Truth tables can be somewhat confusing to comprehend. It is true that this topic is very useful in everyday life because you have to evaluate sometimes what you may be saying could be false according to the truth table. I also like how you got around to explaining truth value of a compound claim. I was kind of unaware of this type of claim but after reading your post I feel like I totally understand the concept now. The closing statement you had really stood out to me cause we really do have to watch what we say. Keep up the good work Allyson.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, as I also agree with Charzard. This was a very explanatory and thought out post, in which I believe you even helped me learn a little more about the Truth-Tables which I tried to read over and over to try and understand. At first they are difficult to understand, because our society has taught our generation to have that "slang type lingo" which you referred to. But I also think that by breaking these things down into simple formulas is a good way to understand how these types of claims work. I also was unaware of this type of claim, but I believe you did a good job of explaining it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Charzard and with jkrabby. You did a great job. I was kind of confused with this topic and your explanations and example helped me out in trying to understand the concept completely. Truth tables is a very complex topic and some what hard to comprehend at least for me anyways. Glad you were able to understand it and explain it to me. Also, it is very true that in today's society our speech and language has been very corrupted. Slang is everywhere and many people use it sometimes even unknowingly. We all do need to watch how we talk and what we say. Good job!
